Why Your Student Needs a School Physical

While schools across New Jersey are still working to determine their plans for the 2020-2021 academic year, your child will still require a school physical to be put on file with the school nurse. A physical examination must be updated within 30 days of the first day of school for your child to enter classes.

What happens during a school physical?

A school physical is an opportunity for your child to be checked by a physician for any issues that may have developed over the course of the previous school year. This can include acute illnesses or injuries that may affect your child’s ability to learn in school. A school physical will consist of:

  • Checking vital signs and measuring weight and height
  • Checking vision and hearing for major changes since their previous examination
  • Ear, nose and throat examination
  • Reflex and scoliosis check
  • Review of medical and vaccination history, with updated vaccinations administered as needed

Does my child need a sports physical?

If your child is planning on participating in school or community sports programs this year when such programs resume, your child will need a sports physical to have on file with the school or organization. Sports physicals are used to diagnose any injuries or conditions that can affect your child’s ability to participate in athletic activity as well as classes. An updated sports physical will need to be on file prior to the first practice of the season.
